When you’re injured in an accident you just want life to get back to normal as fast as possible. One minute you’re going about your business and the next you’re in the E.R. It’s not right or fair.
To make matters worse you have to wait to get paid for your hardship. But how long? That’s usually a difficult question for your attorney to answer, and a lot of factors come into play. Here’s three:
- You have to complete treatment. Very rarely can your lawyer convince the opposing party to pay before they have a real idea how much your injuries cost. Healing takes time, bones must mend and rehab must be completed. It’s a slow process that can’t be rushed.
- Your insurance company has to produce liens. Most times we have to wait for treatment to end AND for the accompanying bills to get generated. That process takes time, and there’s just no rushing the insurance company. If you’ve ever sat on hold waiting to talk about your premium then you know what we lawyers are dealing with.
- You have to wait for an offer of settlement. This one is personally most frustrating to me. Your lawyer has done all his homework. You’ve completed treatment and the opposing party has even admitted liability. But now we wait on the offer. Adjusters have more than one case on their desk and their own set of priorities. Some are just lazy. It’s not totally uncommon to wait months for an offer.
Add all that up and it’s easy to see why it could take years to get paid. This is why it’s so important for you to hire a lawyer that is both efficient and motivated. Usually these delays fall on our shoulders. You don’t want a lawyer who is dragging his feet when you have plenty more roadblocks to wait on! Choose wisely!
